Millions of dollars are spents every year in this country to brand Malaysia from the point of Tourism, exhibitions and trade tours done by Matrade, establishment of various government embassies worldwide, advertisements … tonnes and tonnes of public money are used to create and inform the world that Malaysia is a fantastic country, a Truly Asia type of brand that is worth coming here to make an investment and spend money for holidays.
All those efforts in the world stage is almost completely wiped out from yesterday’s uses of some idiots decided to deploy one of the most draconian and prehistoric laws that exists in this country. Every time that law is being implemented the Malaysia Brand goes right down to the pits.
I am upset about this like so many other Malaysians but the thing why I wanted to mentioned it in this blog about branding is that it relates to the international image of Malaysia as a country brand. At another level, companies that want to build brands should also take heed of this lesson:
1. Never employ an idiot to manage or run your brand.
2. Always be on the look out for idiots or even considering putting idiots in powerful positions that is in a non-marketing department that is very exposed to the press, customers and people that have access to your customers.
3. Always, always practices common sense and consider the impact to your brand when making decisions in any operations that may seem unrelated to marketing/branding.
4. Never promote a person that cannot make proper judgment especially when it comes to responsibilites that affect brand image.
5. It’s my personal belief that if you have a choice – never hire an idiot, work with an idiot and best if you are like me, never hesitate to fire an idiot.
On another lighter note, probably a lot of people might have already know this but I don’t. I happen to stumble upon a restaurant own by a local celebrity and the restaurant has a blog! I think this is way kewl idea to have a blog for restaurant because it’s one way to keep the information going and people participating. Maybe they should have other kewl 2.0 tools too and hire a full time 2.0 guy to manage it!
